14 may 2018, Jerusalem celebrates, Tel Aviv parties and Gaza bleeds — a surreal 24 hours in which wide range of emotions are triggered. While the Israeli army utilizes high-end technology to expel their enemy, Palestinians throw rocks, burn car tires and use incendiary kites. As humans we see this division and question these events. But how does computer vision interpret this? This video installation observes one day, 14 may 2018 in Israel and Palestine. This particular algorithm has a frame of reference that consists of a dataset of around 100.000 images. With this in mind Jochem Walboomers want to address how artificial “intelligence” is still utterly incapable of reading emotional context, and as object recognition software becomes more integrated into our societies infrastructure, this will be a source of concern.

14 mei 2018, Jeruzalem viert, Tel Aviv viert en Gaza-bloedt – een surrealistische 24 uur waarin een breed scala aan emoties wordt geactiveerd. Terwijl het Israëlische leger high-end technologie gebruikt om hun vijand te verdrijven, gooit de Palestijn stenen, verbrandt hij autobanden en gebruikt hij vuurbommen. Als mensen zien we deze verdeeldheid en hebben we onze vraagtekens bij deze gebeurtenissen. Maar, hoe interpreteert computervisie dit? Deze video-installatie observeert een dag, 14 mei 2018 in Israël en Palestina. Dit specifieke algoritme heeft een referentiekader dat bestaat uit een gegevensset van ongeveer 100.000 afbeeldingen. Met dit in gedachten wil Jochem Walboomers ingaan op de vraag hoe kunstmatige “intelligentie” nog steeds absoluut niet in staat is om de emotionele context te lezen, en omdat software voor objectherkenning steeds meer geïntegreerd raakt in de infrastructuur van onze samenleving, zal dit een bron van zorg zijn.
